Exceptions

  • We understand that emergencies and unforeseen circumstances happen. In such cases, please get in touch with us immediately and we will sort it out!

The Counseling Guild operates on a fee-for-service basis. This means insurance is NOT accepted. We prefer to work directly with our clients and avoid billing insurance companies. This enables us to increase our work's confidentiality and maximize the time focused on your important concerns.

In addition, operating in this manner allows you to…

  • The reality is that anytime you bill an insurance company, they require a mental health diagnosis.

If a diagnosis is important to you, we can talk about that. However, in my experience, most people don’t neatly fit into a box. We are humans. We are complex.

Tragically, insurance companies only cover mental health services on specific diagnoses. This forces counselors and therapists to document a diagnosis, even if there isn’t one, so they can get paid. Oof.

Finally, having a formal mental health diagnosis on record can negatively impact future financial, professional, career, and other opportunities for you.

  • Counselors have stricter standards for your private information than insurance companies.

When an insurance claim is processed, many individuals and departments become involved and privacy can’t be guaranteed.

What’s more, is that insurance companies are known to demand client information from their providers to justify coverage.

  • Professional counseling can address a whole host of issues that fall outside of the symptom-focused parameters of a traditional diagnosis.

Specifically at The Guild, we address couples issues, communication skills, career development, existential concerns, loss/anguish, lifestyle/distress, and life transitions, among others.

Insurance companies require ‘medical necessity’ to cover mental health services, which demands counselors provide a diagnosis even if there isn’t one. I call that dishonesty.

  • Insurance companies have internal policies that limit how much, how often, what diagnosis, and how long sessions can be. They have a conflict of interest that ultimately puts profits over your care.

At The Counseling Guild, we have the freedom and flexibility to offer unique session lengths and timeframes that are created in collaboration with you and your goals.
