Why We Laugh (Poem)

Why We Laugh

I laugh to savor the instant

to stir the pot of life

to resist the lurch of malevolence

to appease the absurdity

to critique the authority

to learn what is real

I laugh to lighten the burden

to breathe in the mundane

to challenge sorrow’s dominion

to push against gravity

to question the assumption

to go beyond the orange’s peel

I laugh to cast light on the dark

to revel in the mystery

to share a bite of life

to soften the incoming blows

to reveal our humanity

to bring ignorance to its heel
